Pneumococcal Disease Prevention and Treatment:
The Critical Role of Pulmonary Medicine

Please join the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and MedscapeCME for an interactive Town Hall addressing the unmet needs and knowledge gaps related to pneumococcal disease prevention and treatment in adults.

In an era of rising antibiotic resistance and evolving epidemiology, the timely prevention and treatment of pneumococcal disease is becoming increasingly important. Pulmonologists and other clinicians specializing in pulmonary medicine are in a unique position to interact and direct the care of numerous at-risk patient populations. The potential benefits and evidence-based significance of disease prevention and treatment modalities will be examined, including the burden of pneumococcal infection, shifting epidemiological patterns, diagnosis, judicious treatment in the face of antibiotic resistance, and steps to prevent the spread of pneumococcal disease.

This Town Hall is presented in an interactive format, encouraging attendees' participation throughout the program. In addition, the activity will be videotaped and made available for online viewing at a later date.

  • Outline steps to diagnose pneumococcal disease in special patient populations
  • Outline strategies for pneumococcal disease prevention
  • Considering the changing epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae and antibiotic resistance, design a
guideline- and evidence-based treatment plan for pneumococcal disease in patients with chronic lung disease, immune deficiency, or advanced age
