Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Understand the basic principles of immune reconstitution in HIV-infected patients treated with ART and the causes and consequences of the various disorders of immune reconstitution
  2. Be able to assess the cause of, and manage, CD4+ T-cell deficiency in patients receiving effective ART
  3. Understand the immunopathogenesis of immune restoration disease, immune-mediated inflammatory disease, and autoimmune disease presenting as disorders of immune reconstitution during ART (immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome [IRIS])
  4. Be able to prevent and manage immune restoration disease
  5. Discuss recommendations for influenza vaccine for HIV-infected adults and their household contacts
  6. List common live immunizations that are contraindicated in HIV-infected adults with CD4 counts < 200 cells/microliter
  7. Describe appropriate hepatitis B vaccine dosing and appropriate evaluation for vaccine response in HIV-infected adults
  8. Elucidate how human papillomavirus vaccine is made and the indications for immunization
  9. Describe the impact that the conjugate pneumococcal vaccine has had on the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in HIV-infected adults
