Preoperative short-term radiation therapy appears to improve the risk for local recurrence of resectable rectal carcinoma in the short term, but the long-term effects of this treatment are less clear. The current study reports on over 6 years of follow-up data from a controlled trial of preoperative radiation therapy for rectal carcinoma.
