Learning Objectives

Participants will be provided with clinically relevant, evidence-based information. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the interrelationships among diabetes, renal disease, hypertension, and anemia;
  2. Describe conditions associated with diabetic renal disease (including bone disease, hypertension, and anemia) and their implications beyond renal function;
  3. Identify early stages of diabetic renal disease through initiation of a protocol of ongoing laboratory screening and estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR);
  4. Diagnose anemia in the patient with diabetic renal dysfunction and initiate appropriate treatments;
  5. Initiate strategies to prevent development of macrovascular disease.
