The incidence of diabetes is increasing, and 15% of patients with diabetes will develop an ulcer -- with half noticing the lesions themselves. The majority of foot ulcers occur on the digits. Self-examination of the feet and proper fitting of footwear for diabetic patients are essential to prevent ulcers, especially in the presence of sensory neuropathy or ischemia.
